Coral Care Tips for a Thriving Reef Tank

Corals are the heart of any reef tank. They transform a saltwater aquarium from a fish display into a living, breathing ecosystem. But corals have specific needs — and understanding those needs is the difference between a thriving reef and a frustrating one.
Whether you're keeping your first zoanthid colony or expanding into LPS and SPS, these coral care tips will help you build a reef that grows and flourishes.
Understand What Corals Actually Are
Corals are animals — tiny polyps that form colonies and build calcium carbonate skeletons over time. Most reef aquarium corals contain symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae living in their tissue. These algae photosynthesize light and provide the coral with the majority of its energy. This is why lighting is so critical in coral care.
When corals are stressed — by poor water quality, incorrect lighting, or temperature swings — they expel their zooxanthellae in a process called bleaching. A bleached coral isn't dead, but it's in serious trouble and needs immediate attention.
The Three Pillars of Coral Care
Successful coral keeping comes down to three fundamentals: stable water chemistry, appropriate lighting, and adequate flow.
1. Stable Water Chemistry
Corals are far more sensitive to parameter swings than fish. The key parameters to maintain for coral health are:
- Alkalinity (dKH): 8–10 dKH — the most critical parameter for coral growth
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm — essential for skeleton building
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm — supports calcium and alkalinity stability
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
- Nitrate: Under 10 ppm for most corals; under 5 ppm for SPS
- Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm
Test these parameters weekly and dose two-part, kalkwasser, or run a calcium reactor to keep alkalinity and calcium stable as your corals consume them.
2. Appropriate Lighting
Different corals have different light requirements. A common mistake is placing a high-light SPS coral in a low-light position, or burning a shade-loving mushroom with intense PAR.
- Soft corals (mushrooms, leathers, zoanthids): Low to moderate light — 50–150 PAR
- LPS corals (hammer, torch, frogspawn): Moderate light — 100–250 PAR
- SPS corals (acropora, montipora): High light — 200–400+ PAR
Use a PAR meter to map your tank's light levels before placing corals. Acclimate new corals to your lighting gradually — start them lower in the tank and move them up over 2–4 weeks.
3. Adequate Flow
Corals need water movement to deliver nutrients, remove waste, and prevent detritus from settling on their tissue. Most corals prefer random, turbulent flow rather than a direct, laminar stream.
- Soft corals: Moderate, gentle flow
- LPS corals: Moderate flow — enough to sway their tentacles gently
- SPS corals: High, random flow — they thrive in surge-like conditions
Acclimating New Corals
Never drop a new coral directly into your tank. Proper acclimation reduces stress and improves survival rates significantly.
- Float the sealed bag in your tank for 15 minutes to equalize temperature.
- Open the bag and slowly add small amounts of your tank water every 5 minutes over 30–45 minutes.
- Use a coral dip (like CoralRx or Revive) to remove pests before placing the coral in your display tank.
- Place the coral in a low-flow, lower-light area initially and observe for 24–48 hours before moving it to its permanent position.
Feeding Your Corals
While zooxanthellae provide most of a coral's energy through photosynthesis, many corals also benefit from direct feeding — especially LPS corals with large polyps.
- Zoanthids and mushrooms: Generally don't require target feeding but benefit from dissolved organics in the water.
- LPS corals (hammer, torch, brain corals): Feed 1–2x per week with mysis shrimp, reef roids, or other small meaty foods. Turn off flow during feeding so food reaches the polyps.
- SPS corals: Primarily photosynthetic but benefit from amino acid supplements and dissolved nutrients.
Common Coral Problems and Solutions
Bleaching: Usually caused by temperature stress, high light, or a sudden parameter swing. Identify and correct the cause, then give the coral time to recover in stable conditions.
Brown Jelly Disease: A bacterial infection that rapidly dissolves coral tissue. Remove the affected coral immediately, frag away healthy tissue, and dip in a coral-safe treatment.
Recession / RTN / STN: Rapid or slow tissue necrosis in SPS corals. Often triggered by a parameter crash or physical damage. Frag above the recession line immediately to save healthy tissue.
Pests (Aiptasia, Montipora-eating nudibranchs, red flatworms): Quarantine and dip all new corals before adding them to your display tank. Treat infestations promptly before they spread.
Start with Hardy Corals
If you're new to coral care, begin with forgiving species that tolerate a wider range of conditions:
- Zoanthids and palythoa
- Mushroom corals (discosoma, rhodactis)
- Leather corals (toadstool, finger leather)
- Green star polyps (GSP)
- Duncan coral
- Hammer and torch corals (LPS)
These corals will teach you the fundamentals of coral care while being forgiving of the occasional parameter fluctuation that every new reefer encounters.
