Anemone Crab
Anemone Crab
Fascinating Symbiotic Reef Invertebrate
The Anemone Crab (Neopetrolisthes maculatus), also known as the Porcelain Anemone Crab or Spotted Porcelain Crab, is a captivating reef-safe invertebrate that forms a unique symbiotic relationship with host anemones. These small, delicate crabs are prized for their intricate spotted patterns and fascinating behavior as they live among the tentacles of their anemone hosts.
Why Anemone Crabs Stand Out
- Symbiotic relationship: Lives peacefully within the protective tentacles of host anemones, particularly Bubble Tip, Carpet, and Sebae anemones
- Filter feeding behavior: Uses specialized fan-like appendages to capture plankton and organic particles from the water column
- Beautiful coloration: Features distinctive white or cream body with reddish-brown spots and markings
- Reef-safe and peaceful: Completely harmless to corals, fish, and other invertebrates
- Small footprint: Typically reaches only 1 inch in diameter, making them suitable for nano and standard reef systems
Care Requirements
Temperature: 72–78°F
Salinity: 1.023–1.025 specific gravity
pH: 8.1–8.4
Host Anemone: Recommended but not always required; thrives best with Bubble Tip, Carpet, or Sebae anemones
Anemone crabs are filter feeders that capture microscopic food particles from the water. In well-established reef aquariums with regular feeding, they typically receive adequate nutrition. Supplemental feeding with liquid plankton or finely powdered foods can be beneficial in lower-nutrient systems.
What to Expect
These charming crabs will typically establish themselves within or near their host anemone, using the tentacles for protection while filter feeding. They are peaceful and can be kept in pairs or small groups. While they prefer living with an anemone, they can survive without one by taking refuge in rockwork crevices. Anemone crabs are delicate and should be acclimated slowly to avoid stress.
