Black sea cucumbers are detritivores that feed by processing sand and extracting organic matter. They require a mature aquarium with an established sand bed containing natural detritus and microfauna. In newer systems or those with very clean sand beds, supplemental feeding with sinking pellets, frozen foods, or detritus-based supplements may be necessary.

Important Considerations

Sea cucumbers can release toxins if severely stressed, injured, or dying, which can be harmful to tank inhabitants. Maintain stable water parameters, avoid aggressive tank mates, and ensure proper acclimation. Never expose them to air during handling or transfer. Black sea cucumbers are best suited for experienced aquarists with established reef systems. One cucumber is typically sufficient for every 75-100 gallons of aquarium volume with adequate sand bed area.
