Bumblebee Snails (Engina mendicaria)
Bumblebee snails are small, eye-catching members of the clean-up crew, named for their distinctive yellow and black striped shells that resemble a bumblebee's coloring. These carnivorous snails are particularly effective at controlling unwanted pests in reef aquariums.
Key Benefits:
- Excellent hunters of vermetid snails and other small pest snails
- Help control flatworms and detritus
- Small size (typically 0.5-1 inch) allows them to access tight spaces
- Hardy and adaptable to most reef conditions
Care Requirements:
- Temperature: 72-78°F
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025 specific gravity
- Diet: Carnivorous - feeds on small snails, worms, and meaty foods; may require supplemental feeding if pest populations are low
- Reef Safe: Yes, but may prey on small beneficial snails if food is scarce
- Acclimation: Drip acclimate for 30-60 minutes
Important Notes:
Bumblebee snails are more predatory than typical herbivorous CUC members. They're best added when you have a specific pest snail problem. Monitor their behavior and ensure adequate food sources to prevent them from targeting desirable snails. They may occasionally burrow in the sand bed while hunting.
Recommended Stocking: 1 per 10-20 gallons, depending on pest population
