Lawnmower Blennies (Salarias fasciatus) are among the most effective and entertaining algae-eating fish available for reef aquariums. Named for their methodical grazing behavior that resembles mowing a lawn, these charming fish constantly work across rocks and glass consuming hair algae and film algae. With their endearing personalities, expressive faces, and tireless work ethic, Lawnmower Blennies are both functional cleanup crew members and beloved tank personalities.

• Provide hiding spots and caves for security

Feeding: While Lawnmower Blennies are excellent algae grazers, they require supplemental feeding if algae becomes depleted. Offer nori (dried seaweed), spirulina flakes, or herbivore pellets 2-3 times per week to ensure proper nutrition. A well-fed blenny is a healthy blenny.

Behavior: Lawnmower Blennies are generally peaceful but can be territorial with other blennies or similar bottom-dwelling fish. Keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is very large (100+ gallons). They often claim a favorite perching spot where they observe the tank with their characteristic bug-eyed expression.

Important Notes: Lawnmower Blennies are jumpers - a secure lid or screen top is essential. They may nip at clam mantles or large-polyp stony corals if underfed, so ensure adequate algae or supplemental feeding.
