Maxima Clam: Jewel of the Reef
Maxima Clams (Tridacna maxima) are among the most stunning and sought-after additions to a reef aquarium. These magnificent bivalves display brilliant, vibrant colors ranging from electric blues and greens to deep purples and golds, creating a living centerpiece that rivals even the most colorful corals. Beyond their beauty, maxima clams are filter feeders that help improve water quality while adding movement and life to your reef.
Why Maxima Clams?
- Spectacular coloration with endless variety - each clam is unique
- Natural filter feeder that helps maintain water quality
- Adds dynamic movement as the mantle responds to light and water flow
- Reef-safe and beneficial to the aquarium ecosystem
- Long-lived with proper care - can thrive for many years
- Fascinating symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae
Care Requirements:
- Temperature: 72-78°F
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- High lighting required (PAR 200-350+) - photosynthetic
- Moderate to strong water flow for feeding
- Stable calcium (400-450 ppm), alkalinity (8-11 dKH), and magnesium (1250-1350 ppm)
- Supplement with phytoplankton and amino acids 2-3 times per week
- Excellent water quality - low nitrates and phosphates
Placement: Maxima clams prefer to attach to live rock in well-lit areas. Provide stable rockwork and allow the clam to choose its position. Once attached, avoid moving the clam as this can damage the byssal threads.
Important Notes: Maxima clams require established reef aquariums with stable parameters and mature lighting. They are sensitive to rapid changes in water chemistry. Acclimate slowly and monitor closely during the first few weeks.
Tank Size: Minimum 50 gallons with stable reef parameters.
Each Maxima Clam is carefully selected for vibrant coloration and health, quarantined, and inspected to ensure you receive a stunning specimen ready to become the jewel of your reef aquarium.
