What Makes the Naked Clownfish Special:

The Naked Clownfish represents a fascinating achievement in selective breeding. While most clownfish variants focus on enhancing or modifying the classic three-bar pattern, the Naked morph takes the opposite approach—completely eliminating the white bands and black pigmentation to reveal pure orange coloration. This creates a strikingly different appearance that stands out in any reef aquarium.

The term "naked" refers to the fish being "naked" of its typical white stripes, not to any lack of scales or protective coating. These fish are perfectly healthy and fully scaled like any other clownfish.

Coloration & Appearance:

The Naked Clownfish displays a clean, minimalist beauty:

  • Solid orange coloration covering the entire body
  • No white bands or black outlines
  • Color intensity can range from bright orange to deeper tangerine tones
  • Fins match the body color with no contrasting markings
  • Well-fed specimens display the most vibrant orange coloration
  • Some individuals may show very subtle variations in orange intensity across the body

Behavior & Personality:

Naked Clownfish retain all the charming behaviors and hardy nature of standard clownfish. They're active, interactive, and may establish territories around rock formations or host anemones (Bubble Tip Anemones are a favorite, though hosting is not required for their health). They can be kept as pairs or single specimens and are generally peaceful with other species, though they may show aggression toward other clownfish in smaller tanks.

Anemone Hosting:

Like other clownfish, Naked Clownfish may form symbiotic relationships with host anemones including:

  • Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) - most popular choice
  • Magnificent Anemone (Heteractis magnifica)
  • Carpet Anemones (Stichodactyla species)

However, anemones are not required for the clownfish's health or happiness. Many Naked Clownfish will adopt substitute hosts like leather corals, torch corals, or even powerheads if no anemone is present.

Pairing & Breeding:

Naked Clownfish can be kept in pairs and may breed in captivity. Like all clownfish, they're protandrous hermaphrodites—all fish start as males, and the dominant fish in a pair will become female. If you're interested in breeding, purchase two fish of different sizes and allow them to naturally pair up. The larger fish will become the female.

Feeding:

Naked Clownfish are easy to feed and readily accept a variety of foods. Offer high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp 1-2 times daily. A varied diet maintains their vibrant orange coloration and supports optimal health. Well-fed clownfish display the most intense coloration and are more resistant to disease.

Compatibility:

Naked Clownfish are generally peaceful with most tank mates including:

  • Gobies, blennies, dartfish, and other peaceful community fish
  • Tangs, wrasses, and other semi-aggressive species
  • All types of corals and most invertebrates
  • Shrimp, crabs, and snails

They may show aggression toward other clownfish species, especially in tanks under 40 gallons. If keeping multiple clownfish species, provide plenty of space and visual barriers.

Tank Setup:

Provide live rock with caves and overhangs where the clownfish can establish territory. They appreciate having a "home base" whether it's an anemone, coral, or rock formation. Moderate water flow is ideal, and they adapt well to various lighting conditions. A secure lid is recommended, as clownfish can jump if startled.

Designer Genetics:

The Naked trait is a recessive genetic mutation that must be present in both parents to produce Naked offspring. This makes them less common than standard clownfish variants and adds to their appeal among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate unique designer morphs.

Captive-Bred Advantage:

All our Naked Clownfish are captive-bred, ensuring superior health, disease resistance, and adaptability to aquarium conditions. Captive breeding also protects wild reef populations while providing you with a hardier, more resilient fish that's already acclimated to prepared foods and aquarium life.

Our Naked Clownfish are carefully selected, quarantined, and eating well before shipment. Each fish is backed by our live arrival guarantee, ensuring your unique designer clownfish arrives healthy and ready to bring its distinctive solid orange beauty to your reef aquarium.
