Nassarius Snail
Nassarius Snail
Nassarius Snails (Nassarius sp.)
Nassarius snails are essential sand bed scavengers known for their impressive ability to detect and consume decaying organic matter. These small, active snails spend most of their time buried in the sand, emerging rapidly when they sense food in the water column—a fascinating behavior to observe.
Key Benefits:
- Excellent scavengers that consume uneaten food, detritus, and decaying matter
- Keep sand bed clean and help prevent nutrient buildup
- Aerate the substrate as they burrow, promoting healthy bacterial colonies
- Quick response to feeding—often emerge within seconds of food hitting the tank
- Hardy and easy to care for
Care Requirements:
- Temperature: 72-78°F
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025 specific gravity
- Diet: Carnivorous/scavenger - feeds on meaty foods, detritus, and decaying matter; benefits from occasional targeted feeding
- Substrate: Requires a sand bed of at least 1-2 inches for burrowing behavior
- Reef Safe: Yes, safe with corals and most invertebrates
- Acclimation: Drip acclimate for 30-45 minutes
Important Notes:
Nassarius snails are primarily sand dwellers and will stay buried until they detect food. They're excellent at cleaning up after feeding but won't control algae. These snails are peaceful and won't bother healthy tank inhabitants, focusing only on waste and leftover food. Ensure your tank has adequate sand coverage for them to exhibit natural behavior.
Recommended Stocking: 1 per 5-10 gallons of sand bed area
