Peppermint Shrimp: Natural Aiptasia Control Specialists
Peppermint Shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) are among the most valuable additions to a reef aquarium, renowned for their ability to consume pest aiptasia anemones. These attractive, peaceful shrimp feature distinctive red and white striped patterns and provide both functional pest control and visual interest to your reef while being completely safe with corals and most tank inhabitants.
Why Peppermint Shrimp?
- Natural aiptasia anemone control - the most effective biological solution
- Reef-safe and won't harm corals or other invertebrates
- Attractive red and white striped coloration
- Peaceful and can be kept in groups for better aiptasia control
- Also scavenge for detritus and uneaten food
- Hardy and adaptable once acclimated
Care Requirements:
- Temperature: 72-78°F
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Provide rockwork with caves and overhangs for shelter
- Supplement diet with meaty foods if aiptasia is limited (mysis shrimp, pellets)
- Can be kept in groups - multiple shrimp are more effective at aiptasia control
Aiptasia Control: For best results controlling aiptasia, keep 1 Peppermint Shrimp per 10-20 gallons. Multiple shrimp work together more effectively than a single individual. Results may take several weeks as shrimp locate and consume aiptasia throughout the tank.
Important Notes: True Peppermint Shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) are the most reliable aiptasia eaters. They are primarily nocturnal and may be shy initially. Avoid keeping with aggressive fish or large predatory species.
Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons.
Each Peppermint Shrimp is carefully quarantined and inspected to ensure you receive a healthy, active specimen ready to provide natural aiptasia control in your reef aquarium.
