- Care Level: Moderate to Difficult
- Temperament: Peaceful
- Minimum Tank Size: 50+ gallons
- Diet: Omnivore - microorganism grazer
- Reef Safe: Yes
What to Expect
The Red Fromia Starfish is a delicate and beautiful addition to mature reef aquariums. Unlike larger, more aggressive starfish species, the Red Fromia is completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or other invertebrates. It moves gracefully across rockwork and glass, feeding on microorganisms, detritus, and biofilm.
Behavior & Compatibility
This peaceful starfish is completely reef-safe and compatible with all corals, fish, and invertebrates. Red Fromia Starfish are slow-moving and spend most of their time exploring live rock surfaces in search of food. They are primarily active during the day and will often position themselves in visible areas of the aquarium.
Important Care Requirements
Mature Tank Required: Red Fromia Starfish should only be added to well-established aquariums (6+ months old) with abundant live rock and natural food sources. They require excellent water quality with stable parameters and are sensitive to fluctuations in salinity, pH, and nitrate levels.
Feeding
In mature aquariums with plenty of live rock, Red Fromia Starfish will find sufficient natural food sources including microorganisms, biofilm, and detritus. Supplemental feeding is rarely necessary but can include small pieces of meaty foods placed near the starfish or specialized starfish foods.
Tank Considerations
Maintain pristine water quality with low nitrates (below 20 ppm) and stable parameters. Ensure adequate calcium and alkalinity levels. Red Fromia Starfish are sensitive to copper-based medications and should never be exposed to them. They may be vulnerable to predation by certain fish species including puffers, triggers, and large wrasses.
Acclimation
Critical: Use an extended drip acclimation method over 90-120 minutes. Starfish are extremely sensitive to changes in water parameters and should never be exposed to air during transfer or acclimation, as air bubbles can become trapped and cause tissue damage or death.
