Tiger Serpent Star: The Reef's Nocturnal Scavenger

Tiger Serpent Stars (Ophiolepis superba) are fascinating and beneficial additions to reef aquariums, known for their distinctive banded arms and exceptional scavenging abilities. These nocturnal echinoderms emerge at night to hunt for detritus, uneaten food, and organic waste, making them valuable members of your cleanup crew while adding intrigue to your nighttime reef viewing.

Why Tiger Serpent Stars?

  • Excellent scavenger that consumes detritus and uneaten food
  • Primarily nocturnal - most active at night when hunting for food
  • Distinctive tiger-striped pattern on long, flexible arms
  • Helps maintain water quality by removing organic waste
  • Generally reef-safe with proper feeding
  • Hardy and adaptable once acclimated

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature: 72-78°F
  • Salinity: 1.023-1.025
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Provide rockwork with caves and crevices for daytime hiding
  • Target feed meaty foods 2-3 times per week (mysis shrimp, chopped seafood)
  • Moderate water flow

Important Notes: While generally reef-safe, hungry serpent stars may occasionally prey on small fish, shrimp, or snails if not adequately fed. Ensure regular feeding to prevent opportunistic hunting. Serpent stars are sensitive to sudden salinity changes and require careful acclimation. They may drop arms if stressed, but can regenerate them over time.

Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons.

Each Tiger Serpent Star is carefully quarantined and inspected to ensure you receive a healthy, active specimen ready to provide effective scavenging and nighttime entertainment in your reef aquarium.
