Tuxedo Urchin: Elegant Algae Control with Personality
Tuxedo Urchins are among the most popular and effective algae-eating urchins for reef aquariums. Named for their distinctive black and white banded spines that resemble a formal tuxedo, these charming invertebrates are excellent at controlling hair algae and film algae while adding visual interest and personality to your reef.
Why Tuxedo Urchins?
- Excellent hair algae and film algae control on rocks and glass
- Reef-safe and won't harm corals when properly fed
- Distinctive black and white coloration adds visual appeal
- Often decorates itself with shells, rocks, and debris - fascinating behavior
- Peaceful and compatible with most reef inhabitants
- Smaller size makes them suitable for a wide range of tank sizes
Care Requirements:
- Temperature: 72-78°F
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Stable alkalinity and adequate calcium for spine and test (shell) health
- Ensure sufficient algae or supplement with nori if algae is limited
Important Notes: While generally reef-safe, hungry urchins may occasionally knock over small coral frags while grazing. Ensure adequate food sources and secure coral placement. Urchins are sensitive to sudden salinity changes and require careful acclimation.
Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons.
Each Tuxedo Urchin is carefully quarantined and inspected to ensure you receive a healthy, active specimen ready to provide effective algae control and entertainment in your reef aquarium.
