Camel Shrimp
Camel Shrimp
The Camel Shrimp (Rhynchocinetes durbanensis) is a fascinating and active cleaner shrimp known for its distinctive humped back and vibrant red-and-white banding. These hardy invertebrates are popular additions to reef aquariums, where they help control pests like bristleworms and detritus while adding movement and color to your tank.
Care Level
Beginner to Intermediate – Hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for most reef setups.
Reef Compatibility
Reef Safe with Caution – While generally peaceful, camel shrimp may nip at soft corals, zoanthids, and small polyps, especially if underfed. They are best kept in SPS-dominant or fish-only systems, or monitored closely in mixed reefs.
Temperament & Behavior
Camel shrimp are active scavengers and cleaners, often seen picking through rockwork and substrate for food. They are generally peaceful toward fish and other invertebrates but may be territorial with other shrimp species. Nocturnal by nature, they become more active during evening hours.
Feeding
Omnivorous – Feed a varied diet including high-quality pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods. Supplement with meaty foods 2-3 times per week to prevent coral nipping.
Tank Requirements
Minimum tank size: 20 gallons
Stable water parameters with proper acclimation (drip method recommended)
Plenty of rockwork and hiding spots
Avoid copper-based medications
