CaribSea Ocean Direct Original Grade 40lb
Ocean Direct Caribbean Live Sand - 40 lb
Ocean Direct is different. This pure aragonite substrate utilizes patent pending Sea Breathe laser technology to allow efficient respiration right in the bag. This method preserves real live sand with its own original, natural bacteria. Every bag of Ocean Direct is alive and breathing with up to 1000 times more beneficial water purifying bacterial than other preservation methods. Every grain of Ocean Direct is coated with bacteria and encapsulated, by capillary action, in a film of real ocean water. The thin film is open to the atmosphere for unparalleled gas exchange. This results in high counts of natural and beneficial bacteria with no noxious buildup of metabolic by-products. Each bag contains a packet of Bio-Magnet clarifier to reposition any free floating bacteria to where they are most active: sand beds, live rock surfaces, and biological filtration media. Ocean Direct gives you a thriving, natural aquarium in minutes! The 40 pound bag of Ocean Direct Caribbean Live Sand has a typical grain size between 0.25 mm and 6.5 mm and features an average density of 87 pounds per cubic foot.
Feeding & Diet
Feeding & Diet
An opportunistic omnivore, the Pithos Crab will scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and algae — making it a natural cleanup crew member. Supplement with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or pellets 2–3x per week if natural food sources are limited.
Care & Water Parameters
Care & Water Parameters
The Pithos Crab thrives in stable, well-maintained reef conditions. Target parameters: temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. A mature, established tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.
Reef & Tank Compatibility
Reef & Tank Compatibility
Generally considered reef-safe. The Pithos Crab coexists well with most corals and peaceful fish. Use caution with very small invertebrates or slow-moving tankmates. Provide ample rockwork and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.
Size & Growth
Size & Growth
Pithos Crabs are typically shipped at 0.5–1.5 inches. They are slow-growing and generally remain small, making them well-suited for nano and mid-size reef systems.
