Clown Sm Tang: Vibrant Elegance for Your Reef Aquarium

The Clown Sm Tang (Acanthurus lineatus), also known as the Lined Surgeonfish, is a striking and dynamic addition to any reef aquarium. With its bold vertical stripes of electric blue, yellow, and black, this tang brings a splash of vibrant color and elegance to your underwater world. Its active swimming patterns and charismatic personality make it a favorite among reef enthusiasts.

Care Level & Requirements

**Care Level:** Moderate
**Temperament:** Semi-aggressive
**Minimum Tank Size:** 100+ gallons
**Diet:** Herbivore - primarily algae grazer
**Reef Safe:** Yes

**Water Parameters:**
- Temperature: 72-78°F
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.020-1.025
- dKH: 8-12

**Feeding:**
The Clown Sm Tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, which helps boost its immune system and enhances its vibrant colors. Regular offerings of dried seaweed, spirulina, and high-quality flake or pellet food formulated for herbivores are recommended. Supplement its diet with occasional blanched vegetables like zucchini and spinach to ensure optimum health.

Compatibility & Behavior

The Clown Sm Tang is generally reef-safe, making it an excellent choice for reef aquariums. However, due to its semi-aggressive nature, it is best housed with other peaceful species of similar size. Avoid keeping it with other tangs or aggressive fish to prevent territorial disputes. It thrives in a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming space and ample hiding spots among rocks and corals.

What to Expect

Watch as the Clown Sm Tang becomes an active and engaging member of your aquatic community, gracefully gliding through the water with its captivating stripes and energetic demeanor. This tang not only adds aesthetic value but also helps maintain a healthy ecosystem by grazing on nuisance algae.

Introduce the Clown Sm Tang to your reef aquarium and enjoy the beauty, movement, and functionality it brings to your underwater paradise.

Feeding & Diet

An opportunistic omnivore, the Pithos Crab will scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and algae — making it a natural cleanup crew member. Supplement with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or pellets 2–3x per week if natural food sources are limited.

Care & Water Parameters

The Pithos Crab thrives in stable, well-maintained reef conditions. Target parameters: temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. A mature, established tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.

Reef & Tank Compatibility

Generally considered reef-safe. The Pithos Crab coexists well with most corals and peaceful fish. Use caution with very small invertebrates or slow-moving tankmates. Provide ample rockwork and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.

Size & Growth

Pithos Crabs are typically shipped at 0.5–1.5 inches. They are slow-growing and generally remain small, making them well-suited for nano and mid-size reef systems.
