About the Clown Tang

The Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus) is one of the most visually striking surgeonfish in the marine aquarium hobby. This stunning species features bold horizontal blue and yellow stripes running the length of its body, with vibrant orange accents on the face and tail. Often called the "Lined Surgeonfish" or "Blue-Lined Tang," this active swimmer brings incredible color and movement to large reef aquariums.

Why Reef Keepers Love This Fish

  • Spectacular Coloration: Brilliant blue and yellow horizontal stripes with orange facial markings create a show-stopping appearance
  • Active Swimmer: Constantly on the move, adding dynamic energy throughout the aquarium
  • Algae Control: Excellent grazer that helps control nuisance algae on rocks and glass
  • Reef-Safe: Won't harm corals or invertebrates, making it ideal for mixed reef tanks
  • Personality: Bold and confident once established, becomes a centerpiece fish

Care Requirements

Experience Level: Advanced
Temperament: Aggressive (territorial with other tangs and surgeonfish)
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons (larger is strongly recommended)
Diet: Herbivore—requires frequent feedings of marine algae, nori, spirulina, herbivore pellets, and will graze on live rock. Feed 3+ times daily.
Max Size: 15 inches

Ideal Water Parameters

Temperature: 72-78°F
pH: 8.1-8.4
Salinity: 1.023-1.025 SG
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: <10 ppm (tangs are sensitive to poor water quality)

Important Considerations

Tank Size is Critical: Clown Tangs are large, active fish that require substantial swimming space. A 180-gallon tank is the absolute minimum, with 240+ gallons being ideal for long-term health and to accommodate their adult size and swimming behavior.

Aggressive Temperament: This species is notably territorial and aggressive, especially toward other tangs and surgeonfish. They're best kept as the only tang in the system unless you have a very large aquarium (300+ gallons) with multiple tangs introduced simultaneously. They can also be aggressive toward similarly shaped or colored fish.

Feeding Requirements: As obligate herbivores, Clown Tangs require frequent feedings throughout the day. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and ensure constant access to grazing opportunities on live rock. Underfed tangs are more prone to disease and aggression.

Acclimation: Take extra care during acclimation. Drip acclimation over 60+ minutes is recommended. Tangs are sensitive to changes in water chemistry and can be prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) when stressed.

What to Expect

Your Clown Tang will arrive healthy but may be shy initially. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots during the adjustment period. Once established, they become bold, active swimmers that patrol the entire aquarium. Their stunning coloration intensifies under quality reef lighting, making them one of the most beautiful tangs available—but only for aquarists with the space and experience to meet their demanding care requirements.
