Emerald Crab: Your Reef's Bubble Algae Specialist
Emerald Crabs (Mithraculus sculptus) are among the most valuable and popular cleanup crew members for reef aquariums, renowned for their ability to consume bubble algae (Valonia). These vibrant green crabs are not only effective algae controllers but also add personality and activity to your reef while being generally reef-safe with proper care.
Why Emerald Crabs?
Best natural solution for controlling bubble algae (Valonia)
Bright emerald green coloration adds visual interest
Also consumes hair algae, film algae, and detritus
Active during the day - entertaining to watch
Generally reef-safe when well-fed
Hardy and adaptable once acclimated
Care Requirements:
Temperature: 72-78°F
Salinity: 1.023-1.025
pH: 8.1-8.4
Provide rockwork with caves and crevices for shelter and molting
Omnivorous - supplement diet with meaty foods and algae wafers if bubble algae is limited
Stable iodine levels support healthy molting
Important Notes: While generally reef-safe, hungry or large Emerald Crabs may occasionally nip at soft corals, zoanthids, or small polyp corals if not adequately fed. Ensure regular feeding to prevent opportunistic behavior. They may also prey on small snails or hermit crabs during molting periods. Emerald Crabs are territorial with their own species - provide ample hiding spots if keeping multiple crabs.
Stocking Recommendation: 1 Emerald Crab per 20-30 gallons for bubble algae control.
Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons.
Each Emerald Crab is carefully quarantined and inspected to ensure you receive a healthy, vibrant specimen ready to tackle bubble algae and provide effective cleanup services in your reef aquarium.

Temperature 75–80°F, salinity 1.024–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, alkalinity 8–12 dKH, nitrate under 20 ppm. Keep copper and most fish medications out of the tank; they are toxic to invertebrates. Min tank: 20 gal. Molts as it grows. Supplement with nori if algae runs out. Drip acclimate over 45–60 minutes; inverts are sensitive to fast salinity changes.
