Longnose Hawk: The Charismatic Sentinel of Your Reef

Discover the Longnose Hawk (Oxycirrhites typus), an intriguing and visually striking addition to your reef aquarium. Known for its elongated snout and vibrant coloration, this unique fish not only adds a splash of personality to your tank but also serves as a vigilant sentinel, perching on rockwork and coral to survey its surroundings with curiosity and flair.

Care Level & Requirements

Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Minimum Tank Size: 30+ gallons
Diet: Carnivore - prefers meaty foods
Reef Safe: With Caution

Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72-78°F
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.020-1.025

Longnose Hawks thrive in well-maintained reef aquariums with plenty of live rock for perching. They require a minimum tank size of 30 gallons to accommodate their active nature and provide ample space to explore. Maintaining stable water conditions with appropriate filtration and regular water changes will ensure their health and longevity.

Compatibility & Feeding

While Longnose Hawks are generally reef-safe, they may prey on small ornamental shrimp and other tiny invertebrates. They are best kept with similarly sized fish and should not be housed with overly aggressive tank mates. Introduce them to a community of peaceful to semi-aggressive species to ensure harmony within your aquarium.

As a carnivorous species, the Longnose Hawk thrives on a diet rich in meaty foods. Offer a variety of options such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood to keep them healthy and satisfied. Feeding should occur 1-2 times daily, ensuring they receive the nutrition required for their active lifestyle.

What to Expect

With their distinctive appearance and engaging behavior, Longnose Hawks quickly become a focal point in any reef tank. Watch as they gracefully navigate the rockwork, their keen eyes always on the lookout. Their unique demeanor and adaptability make them a cherished choice for hobbyists seeking a captivating and dynamic addition to their marine ecosystem.

Feeding & Diet

An opportunistic omnivore, the Pithos Crab will scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and algae — making it a natural cleanup crew member. Supplement with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or pellets 2–3x per week if natural food sources are limited.

Care & Water Parameters

The Pithos Crab thrives in stable, well-maintained reef conditions. Target parameters: temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. A mature, established tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.

Reef & Tank Compatibility

Generally considered reef-safe. The Pithos Crab coexists well with most corals and peaceful fish. Use caution with very small invertebrates or slow-moving tankmates. Provide ample rockwork and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.

Size & Growth

Pithos Crabs are typically shipped at 0.5–1.5 inches. They are slow-growing and generally remain small, making them well-suited for nano and mid-size reef systems.
