The Nerite Snail (Neritina spp.) is one of the most popular and effective algae-eating snails for saltwater aquariums, prized for its voracious appetite for nuisance algae and attractive shell patterns. Available in various species with unique colorations and patterns.

Care Level & Requirements

  • Care Level: Easy
  • Temperament: Peaceful
  • Minimum Tank Size: 10+ gallons
  • Diet: Herbivore - algae grazer
  • Reef Safe: Yes

What to Expect

Nerite Snails are exceptional algae controllers, constantly grazing on diatoms, film algae, hair algae, and other nuisance algae from glass, rockwork, and decorations. They're particularly effective at cleaning hard-to-reach areas and will methodically work across all surfaces in your aquarium.

Behavior & Compatibility

These peaceful snails are completely reef-safe and will not harm corals, fish, or other invertebrates. Nerite Snails are active both day and night, continuously moving throughout the aquarium in search of algae. Unlike some other snail species, they cannot reproduce in full saltwater conditions, preventing population explosions in your tank.

Unique Characteristics

One of the most appealing features of Nerite Snails is their inability to breed in marine aquariums. While they may lay small white egg capsules on glass and decorations, these eggs will not hatch in saltwater, making population control effortless.

Feeding

While they primarily feed on naturally occurring algae, supplement their diet with algae wafers or dried seaweed (nori) if natural algae growth is limited. A well-established aquarium with live rock provides the best environment for continuous grazing.

Tank Considerations

Nerite Snails are sensitive to copper-based medications and require stable water parameters. They may occasionally flip over and need assistance righting themselves. Ensure adequate calcium levels in your water to support healthy shell growth and prevent shell erosion.

Acclimation

Use a slow drip acclimation method over 30-45 minutes. Snails are particularly sensitive to changes in salinity and specific gravity. Handle gently and avoid exposing them to air for extended periods during transfer.
