**Purple Urchin: The Vibrant Reef Algae Connoisseur**

The Purple Urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) is a stunning and practical addition to any reef aquarium, renowned for its vibrant purple hue and efficient algae-eating capabilities. This intriguing invertebrate not only enhances the visual appeal of your tank but also plays an instrumental role in maintaining its ecological balance.

**Care Level & Requirements**

**Care Level:** Moderate
**Temperament:** Peaceful
**Minimum Tank Size:** 50+ gallons
**Diet:** Herbivore – algae grazer
**Reef Safe:** Yes

**Optimal Water Parameters**

- **Temperature:** 72-78°F
- **pH:** 8.1-8.4
- **Specific Gravity:** 1.023-1.025
- **Nitrate Levels:** <10 ppm

**Feeding & Compatibility**

The Purple Urchin thrives on a diet primarily composed of algae, making it an invaluable member of your reef's cleanup crew. While it naturally grazes on the algae present in your tank, supplementing its diet with dried seaweed or specialized algae wafers ensures its nutritional needs are fully met. This active grazer helps to keep your aquarium algae-free, contributing to the overall health and clarity of your water.

**Reef and Tank Mate Compatibility**

This peaceful urchin is compatible with most reef tanks and coexists harmoniously with a wide range of tank inhabitants, including fish and corals. Its non-aggressive nature makes it an ideal addition to community tanks, though care should be taken to ensure it doesn’t inadvertently topple unsecured corals or rock structures while foraging.

**What to Expect**

Adding a Purple Urchin to your aquarium not only introduces a splash of color but also brings an industrious algae eater into your ecosystem. Its unique appearance and diligent grazing habits make it a conversation piece and a functional asset to your tank's health. Embrace the dual benefits of beauty and practicality with this captivating marine invertebrate as part of your aquatic environment.

Feeding & Diet

An opportunistic omnivore, the Pithos Crab will scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and algae — making it a natural cleanup crew member. Supplement with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or pellets 2–3x per week if natural food sources are limited.

Care & Water Parameters

The Pithos Crab thrives in stable, well-maintained reef conditions. Target parameters: temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. A mature, established tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.

Reef & Tank Compatibility

Generally considered reef-safe. The Pithos Crab coexists well with most corals and peaceful fish. Use caution with very small invertebrates or slow-moving tankmates. Provide ample rockwork and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.

Size & Growth

Pithos Crabs are typically shipped at 0.5–1.5 inches. They are slow-growing and generally remain small, making them well-suited for nano and mid-size reef systems.
