Sea Hare: The Ultimate Hair Algae Solution

Sea Hares (Dolabella auricularia) are among the most effective and voracious algae eaters available for reef aquariums. These fascinating herbivorous sea slugs are legendary for their ability to consume massive amounts of hair algae, making them the go-to solution for serious algae problems that other cleanup crew members can't handle.

Why Sea Hares?

Exceptional hair algae consumption - can clear heavy infestations quickly
Voracious appetite capable of eating several times their body weight daily
Also consumes film algae and some types of cyanobacteria
Reef-safe and peaceful with corals and other tank inhabitants
Fascinating to watch as they methodically graze across rocks and glass
Can grow quite large (6+ inches) with proper feeding
Care Requirements:

Temperature: 72-78°F
Salinity: 1.023-1.025
pH: 8.1-8.4
Requires abundant hair algae or supplemental feeding with nori/seaweed
Secure all powerheads and overflows - sea hares can get stuck
Stable water parameters
Important Notes: Sea Hares are short-lived (typically 6-12 months) and should be considered a temporary solution for algae problems. Once hair algae is depleted, they must be supplemented with nori or seaweed sheets. If severely stressed, they may release a purple ink as a defense mechanism - this is harmless but can temporarily discolor water. Sea Hares are escape artists and require a covered tank.

Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons with sufficient algae growth.

Each Sea Hare is carefully quarantined and inspected to ensure you receive a healthy, active specimen ready to tackle even the most stubborn hair algae problems in your reef aquarium.

Feeding & Diet

An opportunistic omnivore, the Pithos Crab will scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and algae — making it a natural cleanup crew member. Supplement with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or pellets 2–3x per week if natural food sources are limited.

Care & Water Parameters

The Pithos Crab thrives in stable, well-maintained reef conditions. Target parameters: temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. A mature, established tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.

Reef & Tank Compatibility

Generally considered reef-safe. The Pithos Crab coexists well with most corals and peaceful fish. Use caution with very small invertebrates or slow-moving tankmates. Provide ample rockwork and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.

Size & Growth

Pithos Crabs are typically shipped at 0.5–1.5 inches. They are slow-growing and generally remain small, making them well-suited for nano and mid-size reef systems.
