Tropic Marin Phyton 60g 2.12oz
Even though it is easy to overlook in the case of fixed plankton filter feeders - sponges, soft corals and leather corals meet part of their food requirements by phytoplankton. Natural phytoplankton is an important source of energy and nutrients for leather and soft corals, bivalves and other fine particle filter feeders. In Nature large volumes of water flow through the reef bringing phytoplankton to the corals. In the reef aquarium this energy supply must be replaced in a way which is as close as possible to Nature so that enough nutrients are provided for movement and metabolic processes.
By activating the microflora, numerous vitamins and other vital substances are added to the water in a completely natural way. Corals and bivalves open better and reveal all their rich colouring. The fish also benefit from the stable bacterial flora and the prebiotic effect – they develop robustly and demonstrate their vitality through flawless colouring.
Tropic Marin® Phyton is a balanced plankton replacement for all fine particle filter feeders in the seawater aquarium. A high quality algae mixture provides the animals with trace elements and energy-rich carbohydrates in a form only existing in seawater. Spirulina, one of the ingredients, is also rich in carotinoids and, in combination with brewer's yeast, meets the requirement for natural B group vitamins, particularly vitamin B12.
Feeding & Diet
Feeding & Diet
An opportunistic omnivore, the Pithos Crab will scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and algae — making it a natural cleanup crew member. Supplement with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or pellets 2–3x per week if natural food sources are limited.
Care & Water Parameters
Care & Water Parameters
The Pithos Crab thrives in stable, well-maintained reef conditions. Target parameters: temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. A mature, established tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.
Reef & Tank Compatibility
Reef & Tank Compatibility
Generally considered reef-safe. The Pithos Crab coexists well with most corals and peaceful fish. Use caution with very small invertebrates or slow-moving tankmates. Provide ample rockwork and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.
Size & Growth
Size & Growth
Pithos Crabs are typically shipped at 0.5–1.5 inches. They are slow-growing and generally remain small, making them well-suited for nano and mid-size reef systems.
