Turbo Tropical Snail
Turbo Tropical Snail
The Turbo Topical Snail is a hardy and efficient algae-eating snail, perfect for tropical and subtropical reef aquariums. This robust cleanup crew member is known for its voracious appetite for nuisance algae and adaptability to various tank conditions.
Care Level & Requirements
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful
Minimum Tank Size: 20+ gallons
Diet: Herbivore - algae grazer
Reef Safe: Yes
What to Expect
The Turbo Topical Snail is an exceptional algae controller, consuming large quantities of hair algae, film algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria from glass, rockwork, and substrate. Their larger size and powerful radula make them particularly effective at tackling stubborn algae growth that smaller snails might struggle with.
Behavior & Compatibility
These peaceful snails are completely reef-safe and will not harm corals, fish, or other invertebrates. Turbo Topical Snails are active both day and night, continuously moving throughout the aquarium in search of algae. They're particularly effective at cleaning large surface areas and can cover significant ground in a short period.
Unique Characteristics
Turbo Topical Snails are well-suited for warmer water temperatures typical of tropical reef systems. Their robust build and strong foot allow them to maintain grip on surfaces even in areas with moderate water flow. They're less prone to being knocked over compared to top-heavy turbo species.
Feeding
While they primarily feed on naturally occurring algae, supplement their diet with algae wafers or dried seaweed (nori) if natural algae growth is limited. In well-maintained aquariums with minimal algae, regular supplemental feeding is important to prevent starvation.
Tank Considerations
Turbo Topical Snails are hardy and adaptable but are sensitive to copper-based medications. They require stable water parameters and adequate calcium levels to support healthy shell growth. Ensure they have enough algae or supplemental food to prevent starvation in very clean aquariums.
Acclimation
Use a slow drip acclimation method over 30-45 minutes. Snails are particularly sensitive to changes in salinity and specific gravity. Handle gently and avoid exposing them to air for extended periods during transfer.

Feeding & Diet
Feeding & Diet
An opportunistic omnivore, the Pithos Crab will scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and algae — making it a natural cleanup crew member. Supplement with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or pellets 2–3x per week if natural food sources are limited.
Care & Water Parameters
Care & Water Parameters
The Pithos Crab thrives in stable, well-maintained reef conditions. Target parameters: temperature 72–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. A mature, established tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended.
Reef & Tank Compatibility
Reef & Tank Compatibility
Generally considered reef-safe. The Pithos Crab coexists well with most corals and peaceful fish. Use caution with very small invertebrates or slow-moving tankmates. Provide ample rockwork and hiding spots to reduce territorial behavior.
Size & Growth
Size & Growth
Pithos Crabs are typically shipped at 0.5–1.5 inches. They are slow-growing and generally remain small, making them well-suited for nano and mid-size reef systems.
